If you’d decided 2020 was finally the year to move overseas and become an expat, you may well be understandably disappointed. Border restrictions across the world have made travel in some cases virtually impossible.
So perhaps 2021 will now have to be your year to make the leap and move your life overseas. If you’re not sure where you’d like to move, this will hopefully help by listing five of the top expat cities.
The statistics used within this blog have been taken from the Expat Insider survey, by InterNations. The online resource group conducted a study with more than 20,000 expat workers, of 178 nationalities in 187 countries.
This blog ranks cities on: how safe expats feel in their new city, the availability of health care, how ‘at home’ expats feel, how easy expats can adjust to local culture, how satisfied expats feel with their job and how satisfied expats feel with their work-life balance.
Ranking at number 5 is the French-Canadian city of Montreal. Compared to many other North American cities, rent in Montreal is ‘dirt cheap’. Montreal is a beautifully green city and quite compact, allowing for residents to get around easily by foot or bicycle. Montreal is a melting pot of different cultures, meaning it’s an ideal place for foodies and fans of the arts.
Lifestyle blogger Michael D’Alimonte described the main difference between those who live in Toronto and those who live in Montreal as being: ‘Torontonians live to work, and Montrealer’s work to live.’ This probably explains why Montreal has ‘nightlife like no other’ with some of North America’s top bars and clubs dotted around the city.
You will need to wrap up warm in winter, but if you’re looking for a laid back, green, happening city, Montreal might be the one for you.
Coming in at number four is the island state of Singapore. Singapore can be found South of Malaysia and is home to one of the most incredible skylines in the world. Known for being home to high paying jobs, squeaky clean streets and people from all over the world, this cultural melting pot is a truly fantastic place to live.
Singapore is one of the most well-connected cities in Asia with major cities such as Hong Kong, KL, Bangkok and Jakarta just a few hours away. Singapore is also just a short hop from the Thai islands, Borneo and Bali.
Singaporeans are known for being extremely welcoming and have regular global events including the Singapore GP and Ultra Music Festival. Singapore is by no means a cheap city, but if you’re lucky to find one of the many well-paying jobs, you’ll be ok.
Next up is Vietnam’s, Ho Chi Minh City. Found in the south of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City has become an extremely popular choice for expats.
Vietnamese people are known for being very friendly and welcoming to foreigners. Expats will find locals to be accommodating and genuinely interested in helping them.
If nature is your thing, Ho Chi Minh City is a great option. There are numerous recreational and water parks around the city, which are not just for the kids.
The city is also home to numerous historical and cultural sites for expats to explore. The vibrant local art scene is a representation of the upscale and cosmopolitan lifestyle spread throughout Ho Chi Minh City.
The best thing about Ho Chi Minh City has to be the food! Sourcing only the freshest ingredients, Vietnamese food is packed full of flavour and is known to have many health benefits.
Sticking with the Asian theme, the next stop is Kuala Lumpur. KL is home to a variety of cultures meaning the city is rich in diversity and history.
Malaysia has one of the best healthcare systems in the world, if your contract provides you with healthcare coverage, you’ll be well looked after.
KL is home to a beautiful skyline dominated by the impressive Petronas Towers. However, KL is far from a concrete jungle, the city is one of the greenest business hub cities in Asia. If you travel a short way outside of the city, you’ll find yourself in lush rainforest. A short 30-minute flight takes you to the nearby Langkawi islands.
The winner of our top expat city is.. Taipei!
Taiwan, also known as the Republic of China — not to be confused with the People’s Republic of China which is 110 miles to the west — is an island straddling the Tropic of Cancer. Its capital, Taipei, home to one-third of the country’s population, is a cultural, political and financial hub.
Taipei prides itself on being a top destination for expats with many companies actively seeking out foreign talent, because of this many expats do not struggle in finding work.
Taipei is one of the most tranquil cities in the world, the expansive national parks and beautiful temples dotted around the city, make it a great city for unwinding.
Taipei has it all when it comes to nightlife and entertainment. The bustling city allows you to switch from work to play mode without too much difficulty.
Taipei is also a very well paid city, meaning if you’re looking to build your wealth, this could be the city for you.
